The Revaxis® vaccine provides protection against three serious infections: Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio. These diseases still circulate in many parts of the world, and a booster is recommended for travellers visiting high-risk regions or areas with ongoing outbreaks.

Northfields Travel Clinic provides Revaxis® as a single-dose booster for adults and children from 6 years of age.
Diphtheria is a highly contagious bacterial infection affecting the throat and sometimes the skin. It spreads through:
Coughing or sneezing
Close contact with an infected person
Shared household items (e.g., towels, bedding, clothing)
Diphtheria outbreaks continue to occur in parts of Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The infection can cause airway obstruction, heart inflammation and nerve damage.
Polio is a potentially paralysing viral infection transmitted through:
Contaminated food or water
Poor sanitation
Direct contact with an infected person
Although largely eradicated in many parts of the world, polio still circulates in:
Afghanistan and Pakistan
Regions of Africa with intermittent outbreaks
Areas with low vaccine uptake or conflict
Some countries require proof of recent polio vaccination if you have spent more than 4 weeks in a high-risk area.
Tetanus is caused by a toxin produced by bacteria found in soil worldwide. Infection occurs when:
Soil or dirt enters a cut
A wound is contaminated outdoors
Injuries occur while travelling or doing adventure activities
Unlike diphtheria and polio, tetanus is not spread person to person. Even small wounds can cause infection. Symptoms include muscle stiffness, spasms and difficulty swallowing.
A booster is recommended if:
You are travelling to countries where diphtheria, tetanus or polio are common
You have not had a booster in the last 10 years
You will be trekking, camping or doing outdoor adventure travel
You will be staying with local families
Your job involves potential exposure (healthcare, aid work, emergency response)
You are visiting regions with active polio outbreaks
Most UK adults received 5 childhood doses. A booster is only needed every 10 years for travel.
Revaxis® provides strong protection against all three infections:
Diphtheria
Tetanus
Polio
Protection lasts up to 10 years after a booster.
Those who completed the full childhood vaccination course usually have lifelong protection, but boosters are recommended for travel.
Most people have no side effects. When they occur, they may include:
Redness, swelling or pain at the injection site
Mild fever
Headache
Fatigue
Nausea or dizziness
Symptoms usually resolve within 48–72 hours.
