Tips to Avoid Mosquito Bites in Dengue-Endemic Regions

Appropriate Clothing

In dengue-endemic areas, wearing appropriate clothing can significantly reduce your risk of mosquito bites. Choose loose-fitting clothes that cover as much skin as possible. Light or neutral colours are preferable since mosquitoes are attracted to darker shades. Additionally, avoid using scented products like perfume, hairspray, and aftershave, as these can lure mosquitoes towards you.

Using a Mosquito Net

Using a mosquito net is a crucial step in preventing mosquito bites. Ensure that your mosquito net is large enough to cover your bed completely and can be tucked under the mattress if needed. Before your trip, test the net at home to confirm its size and effectiveness. Upon arrival, spray the net with insect repellent and regularly inspect it for any holes or tears.

Insect Repellents

Different types of insect repellents are available, including sprays, roll-ons, and lotions. Select the form that best suits your needs. Apply insect repellent on exposed skin and clothing, and always apply it over sunscreen for optimal protection. Products containing DEET, picaridin, or lemon eucalyptus oil are often recommended for their effectiveness.

Avoid Peak Mosquito Activity Times

Mosquitoes are most active during early morning and late afternoon/evening. Minimise outdoor activities during these times if possible.

Use Indoor Insecticides

Use insecticide sprays, mosquito coils, or plug-in insecticide vaporizers inside your accommodation to kill or repel mosquitoes. There are a wide variety of products available. Spray your room before sleeping to reduce the number of mosquitoes indoors.

Keep Your Environment Closed and Cool

To minimise exposure to mosquitoes, keep doors and windows closed whenever possible or use screens to block their entry. Utilise air conditioning to maintain a cooler indoor temperature, as mosquitoes are less active in cooler environments. Additionally, spraying insect repellent on window and door screens can provide an extra layer of protection.
